The DJI Mavic Pro Drone has been touted as one of the best drones currently available on the market. That’s the reason why a ton of DJI fans are already turning their heads towards the next version. If you were paying any attention to DJI’s release dates in the past year, you would notice that the DJI Mavic 3 should be their next release.

Now, I don’t really know whether that will turn out to be true or not. But what I do know is that there is already a ton of information regarding the upcoming portable drone. However, these are mostly speculations and rumors. People can’t wait to get their hands on it. However, for the time being, they are just playing the good old guessing game in terms of its specifications and features.

Back to the Mavic 2 models – Pro and Zoom.

With the DJI Mavic 2 Pro and DJI Mavic 2 Zoom, DJI Innovations introduced a new model in the Mavic series in 2018.

Just like the Mavic of the first generation, the second generation is also characterized by a foldable design and high portability.

With the DJI Mavic 2 Pro, the Mavic camera drone is for the first time available with a 1-inch sensor in a Hasselblad camera. We have tested the drone extensively and tried out its multiple flight functions. We also took a close look at the optional DJI Smart Controller and made extensive use of not only the DJI Mavic 2 Pro / Zoom, but also the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual.

Almost unspectacular is the still high-quality design of the DJI Mavic 2, which convinces above all by its stability – especially in direct comparison to rather delicate camera drones like the Parrot Anafi.

For those who find the matt grey design less appealing and would like to add some colour to the DJI Mavic 2 drone, there is the option of customising the somewhat old-fashioned design with colourful skins and foils for DJI Mavic 2 models. On closer inspection, the DJI Mavic 2 not only impresses with its high-quality look and feel, but also with its extensive features. Above all, the new obstacle detection system is impressive, even if it sometimes gets in the way for experienced users.

DJI Mavic Pro 2 Size and Design

DJI Mavic Pro is an incredibly small drone and comes with foldable arms, making it one of the most portable drones around. However, Mavic Pro 2 also came with the same concept in mind and DJI will improved its portability by reducing its size. That’s kind of ridiculous since DJI Mavic Pro was an absolute champion in that division.

There is no doubt that the DJI Mavic series has many advantages in terms of portability and mobility. Thanks to foldable booms and foldable propellers, the quadcopter is extremely compact and robust.

In addition to its dimensions of only 214 × 91 × 84 millimetres and a weight of only 907 grams (DJI Mavic 2 Pro), the DJI Mavic 2 comes with an abundance of accessories that are included in a standard package.

These include the battery, charger and charging cable, data cable, controller or replacement propeller.

DJI Mavic Pro 2 Camera

Mavic Pro has an incredibly powerful camera capable of capturing crystal clear 4K footage with praiseworthy smoothness and stability. However, everything has room for improvement. Mavic 2 came with a 1-inch image sensor, like the one on the DJI Phantom 4 Pro. This feature allowed for even better image quality coming from the Mavic 2.

DJI Mavic Pro 2 Sensors

But the comprehensive sensor technology fits perfectly into the ecosystem of functionalities, which has just helped DJI to become the market leader. This is because the externally visible sensors are integrated with the interior of the drone to form an intelligence that is unparalleled in the field of consumer camera drones. ActiveTrack 2.0, POI 2.0 or Waypoint 2.0 work even more precisely, safely and intuitively in the latest generation.

This of course ensures that the highly intelligent drone can be used without any problems not only by professionals but also by beginners. And anyone who ever finds their way through the jungle of flight and recording functions will appreciate the huge variety of functions offered by current DJI drones.

By the way, with the Enterprise models of the Mavic series, even professional users from industry and commerce have the opportunity to take advantage of the benefits of the DJI camera drone and benefit from even more innovative features.

Transmission system and obstacle avoidance

DJI OcuSync 2.0 ensures extremely stable signal transmission
In addition to its portability and functionality, the DJI Mavic 2 features the new DJI OcuSync 2.0, a transmission system with remarkable ranges of up to 8 kilometres (FCC standard) or 5 kilometres (CE standard) or live image transmission in HD resolution.

Delays are virtually imperceptible in the signal transmission of control commands as well as image and video. The DJI Mavic II is the first DJI aircraft to support automatic switching between the 2.4GHz frequency band and the 5.8GHz frequency band during flight. Seamless signal transmission and intuitive controls – which also applies to the DJI Goggles RE – provide the user with a high sense of safety when flying.

This also applies to the downward-facing obstacle detection system called VPS (Vision Positioning System), which makes take-off and landing procedures, for example, extremely stable. The new LEDs, which additionally illuminate the surface during landing, complete the picture of a modern camera drone.

Note: DJI offers an optional extra warranty called DJI Care Refresh for the DJI Mavic 2 Pro and DJI Mavic 2 Zoom. DJI Care Refresh covers, for example, transport damage or operating errors and, in the event of damage, will replace or repair the DJI Mavic 2.

Maximum speed and flight time

But also the pure flight behaviour is a positive experience. The DJI Mavic 2 lies like a board in the air and maintains its position autonomously thanks to the GPS and Glonass module and all kinds of sensors. In sport mode, the DJI Mavic 2 reaches enormous top speeds of up to 72 kilometers per hour.

The maximum flying time in ideal windless conditions is about 31 minutes. In practice, the DJI Mavic 2 can stay in the air for 27 to 30 minutes, depending on the way you fly, which is perfectly sufficient.

Battery

The integrated LiPo battery has a capacity of 3,850 mAh. If you want, you can purchase additional replacement batteries in the accessories section or choose the optional Fly More Kit for the DJI Mavic 2 (price: 319.- Euro) right from the start.

This offers not only two additional batteries, but also a carrying bag (more here), additional spare propellers and a car charger. Also included is the Powerbank adapter for the battery of the DJI Mavic 2. Alternatively, both the DJI Mavic 2 Pro with DJI Goggles RE video glasses and the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom with DJI Goggles RE video glasses are available in a bundle.

Better usability with DJI Smart Controller

In addition to the standard delivery of the Mavic drone and the traditional folding remote control, we have of course also tested the new DJI Smart Controller. In our opinion, the optional remote control adds significant value – especially the bright display and the DJI GO 4 app embedded in the controller give a solid impression. Only the price of an additional 649 Euros is somewhat deterrent to buying the DJI Smart remote control.

Mavic 2 Pro vs Mavic 2 Zoom – What is the difference?

DJI currently offers two versions of the consumer models of DJI Mavic 2. You can choose either the DJI Mavic 2 Pro or the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom. The DJI Mavic II Pro uses a Hasselblad camera with a 1-inch CMOS sensor and a resolution of 20 megapixels.

Not only is the higher resolution characteristic, but also the variable aperture from f2.8 to f.11. A zoom function or two times lossless zoom (4K recording) or four times lossless zoom (FullHD recording) is only available with the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom.

The Zoom version of the DJI Mavic 2 uses a 1/2.3-inch sensor with fixed aperture (f2.8) and a resolution of 12 megapixels. Both models feature a bit rate of 100 Mbps – and 4K recordings can be recorded at 30 frames per second, 2.7K recordings at 60 frames per second and 1080p recordings even at 120 frames per second. The DNG raw data format on both models offers even more possibilities for post-processing aerial photos.

DJI Mavic 2: the most sophisticated camera drone on the market

Visually, the DJI Mavic 2 Pro or DJI Mavic 2 Zoom may look a little outdated, but on closer inspection and use of the drone, it becomes clear that this is an innovative and technically advanced product. No other manufacturer offers such a wide range of features in such a solid package. In addition to high camera quality, the user benefits from simple and intuitive operation or a high sense of security. There is also a whole range of useful accessories for DJI Mavic 2 (also interesting: PGYTECH accessories for DJI Mavic 2).
