7 Best Selfie Drones for Sale in 2018

I really hated selfies back in the day when they first became popular, because all those “popular” chicks became so obsessed with them that it simply killed all the selfie fun for me. But, nowadays, it’s a whole another story than was the case a few years ago. Nowadays, selfies have evolved and adapted to the modern world, and everyone takes them and everyone loves them.

2016 was the year when the selfie drones became the new hit, and it’s trending in the new year of 2017. Because of the new trend, in 2017 there are plenty of new selfie camera drones that are on the market, and the fact that the drones’ market is becoming flooded with selfie drones comes as no surprise. That’s why it is difficult for the average consumer to decide which one to get.

These drones are characterised by their small size, solid camera and ease of use. Also, they’re usually foldable, which makes them perfect travelling companions. Selfie drones have just started to grow in popularity. However, there are already a bunch of models available on the market. So, if you are looking for a decent selfie drone, I’ve listed some of the best selfie drones currently available on the market, along with their key specifications and why you should consider them.

What is a Selfie?

Selfie is basically a self-portrait photograph taken by a person who is also in the photograph. It has gotten worldwide fame over the course of last couple of years, but believe it or not, selfies range way, way, way back. Robert Cornelius was the first human being to shoot a selfie, and it happened back in 1839 when Mr. Cornelius decided to make a test photograph. The term “selfie” was discussed by photographer Jim Krause in 2005.

How Did Selfies Become So Popular?

Well, it was just a matter of time to be honest. In my personal opinion, the selfie game started stirring up when mainstream Smartphones got decent front cameras. Nowadays, selfies are the most ordinary thing out there, and people are using them to capture dear moments and memories from trips all around the world. Many celebrities – especially sex symbols – post selfies for their followers on social media, but I’m not referring to those. Half-naked women, pretty faces and sexy bodies, I’m not really into that. For me, selfie needs to be connected to a dear memory and feature a special location…

Is There Any Other Selfie Gadgetry out There?

When it comes to selfie gadgetry, I have to say that selfie drones aren’t the first one available on the market. Before them, first there was the infamous selfie stick, but they were just a start to selfie revolution and they quickly became old and boring. The selfie drones were the new cool gadget for social media addicts, and they’re stepping up our selfie game and look damn good doing so. This article is about the collision of two trending titans, the drone world and the selfie world, and the combination of ‘selfie’ and ‘drone’ has brought about a new viral sensation known as ‘dronies.’

How Does a Drone Take a Selfie?

Drones taking selfies seem to be the next big thing. But the question is, how does a drone take a selfie?

The answer to this depends entirely on the type of selfie desired and the flying machine used. Some wish to simply have an aerial still selfie. However, the most popular drone selfies or “dronies” involve focusing on you or your group and then backing out to reveal your location.

You will have to operate the drone, fly it up to a suitable height, aim it at yourself or your group and then capture the selfie or fly the drone backward and upwards.

Other drones are more autonomous. Once you have selected yourself as the subject, they have the ability to actively track you, then follow and record you or focus on you and then fly upwards and outwards, revealing where you are.

Some drones have facial recognition features. They afford them the ability to focus on your face or the face of another for a very clear selfie image.

Tips for Taking Dronies

When taking a ‘dronie‘, it is very important to select an interesting or beautiful location because you will only be the focal point for a short period of time as the drone zoom out and away, revealing your surroundings.

Start by raising the drone between 5 and 10 feet off of the ground, and then face the camera towards yourself and ensure the desired background is behind you. It is recommended to set an advanced gimbal at a level angle if your drone is equipped with it, so that when it backs out it captures the horizon rather than the ground.

After that, start to pitch the selfie drone away from yourself for a couple of seconds. Then elevate slowly, keeping the pitch and elevation equal. Some selfie drones have built-in features that will perform this movement for you, which should result in a smooth, professional-looking capture of yourself and your interesting and beautiful surroundings.

What Features to Look for in a Best Selfie Drone?

It can be tricky to get a drone that will suit all of your needs, especially if that need is for selfies. But don’t worry, I am going to help you with that. There are 3 things you should keep in mind if you want to buy a selfie drone:

  • Camera – A camera is definitely the most important feature. Your drone needs a top-notch image sensor if you’re going to capture stunning aerial shots and videos. You should look for stabilized cameras that can take FHD or even 4K videos/images. Everybody knows that the old myth that claimed “more megapixels equals higher quality” is wrong. However, you still aim for at least 12MP sensor. Also, don’t take stabilization for granted, especially if you’re thinking of recording videos. Motorized gimbals are more important than most of you think, and you’re up for a rough time shooting anything decent if you go for a drone that doesn’t have one.
  • Size – Size is the second noteworthy feature of a good selfie drone. Also, keep in mind that most today’s selfie drones are foldable in a way, whether just by their propellers or entire prop arms. Foldable drones are relatively small and lightweight enough for you to easily put them in a backpack or even your pocket sometimes. This is achieved by making the arms, which hold the rotors foldable inside the body of the drone, so make sure to keep an eye out for their folded and unfolded sizes not to mess them up when making your decision.

Ideally, you should look for a selfie drone that you can easily carry around with you – what good is your selfie drone if it’s never there when you need it the most…  Mobility is a key factor, and most drones featured on this list down below can easily fit into a man purse.

  • Flight Time – Range isn’t on your worry list if you are purchasing a selfie drone. However, battery is a completely different story, because it takes awfully lot of time to take the perfect selfie. It’s an art, so anything less than 10 minutes is a complete miss. If you plan on taking more than a couple selfies per day, you may even need 15 minutes.

Here is a list of Top 7 best selfie drones (in no particular order):

Wingsland S6 Drone

Wingsland S6 is a beautifully designed foldable drone with solid characteristics and great camera, and is advertised as “the most powerful selfie drone on the market“.

It carries a 4K-capable camera with Wi-Fi app control. It can be operated by Gesture Control and even features Obstacle Avoidance. The quadcopter comes in a compact package, with its four limbs folded up against the body. This little fella weighs less than a pound, and is available in orange, yellow, blue or camouflage. This feature gives it a unique feel compared to the other white and black quadcopters in the ‘selfie pocket drone’ category. And last but not least, here are its key specifications: operating range is about 100 meters, and the flight time is approximately 10 minutes.

The drone is equipped with 4 brushless motors. They are capable of propelling the quadcopter at a speed of 8m/second. You will find a rubberized pad beneath each limb. This pad acts as a shock absorber during landing. There is also a “follow-me” feature. This means that you don’t even need to be holding a controller to take the shot.

You can control your Wingsland S6 from your Smartphone, using the Wingsland Fly application. The application offers a simulator so that you can get used to the controls and practice flying before really taking off with your S6. The app also gives you access to four different flying modes.

Once you have downloaded the application from either the App Store or Google Play you will have access to various features, including the strength of the signal, the number of satellite connections, and your drone’s battery life. This is a mid-priced drone, and it is focused on capturing photos and recording footage rather than on actual drone flying or racing. You won’t be getting the functionality of a drone with a more advanced, moving gimbal. However, you won’t be paying as much.

ZEROTECH Dobby

The Dobby pocket selfie drone is flashy, glossy white drone with beautifully designed foldable layout. It features a sleek, minimalist design, and looks like something out of a science fiction movie. It easily fits into your pocket when it is folded, and you don’t need to worry about breaking it (bendgate confirmed!).

This quadcopter packs a major punch for its size, and it is a perfect choice for those who wish to quickly take high-quality photographs and videos of themselves, their activities and families. With its 13MPX built-in camera, it is able to shoot high quality aerial footage… and most importantly – crystal clear selfies. What’s even better, this tiny camera has facial recognition and drone target tracking. These are some interesting features that are quite rare to see with drone cameras, and they will ensure you always get the perfect selfie no matter how clumsy you.

Specification-wise, the battery is kind of disappointing. A full charge gets you only 8 minutes of flight time. On the bright side, the flight range is much better.  Operating range is about 100 meters, which is way more than you will ever need for a proper aerial selfie.

ZEROTECH Dobby Specs

  • Weight: 227 grams (0.5 pounds)
  • Size: 135 X 67 X 36.8 mm (5.3 x 2.6 x 1.4 inches) (folded)

  • Flight Time: 8 minutes
  • Charging Time: 45 minutes

The drone is fully controllable from your Smartphone via the ‘do.fun’ app which is iOS and Android compatible. The drone also features a micro-USB port. This feature allows you to easily download your content from the drone to your laptop or another device.

An acoustic sensor helps the drone in performing gentle landings, while an optical sensor allows the drone to track its position for safe flight indoors.

ZEROTECH Dobby incorporates advanced features such as tracking the user and keeping them in the shot while recording, and it also has a “short video” mode in which it will take a 10-second dronie of you while zooming out from your location.

ZEROTECH Dobby Cons

  • The flight time of 8 minutes is really short
  • For optimal positioning, the drone may require re-calibration with satellites
  • 3 Tap Take-off sometimes works intermittently
  • Awaiting an update for 4K video
  • No obstacle avoidance

The Bottom Line

The ZEROTECH Dobby is unquestionably one of the best small selfie drones currently available on the market. The portability, included sensors and versatile features are a plus, while the flight time is quite short and this is probably the biggest downfall.

The video quality might not be 4K. However, it is very good, especially compared to some of the slightly less expensive drones.

Overall, the ZEROTECH Dobby is the best option for those who are looking for a small drone with excellent image/video quality for short, spontaneous captures.

DJI Spark

I am sure you’ve already heard about the Spark if you’re a DJI fanboy. This amazing new drone is the talking point of entire drone industry, and it promises to take over the selfie drone market.

So basically, we are talking about the smallest DJI drone yet, and the body of drone is as large as a 5″ Smartphone and can easily fit in the palm of your hand. This means that DJI Spark is even smaller than the Mavic Pro. Speaking of the palm of your hand – that’s exactly what you can use to control this little fella. This drone offers advanced gesture controls, which allow you to move it with your hand. You need to just raise up your palm in the air, and the drone will follow it around. It’s really advanced, because you can also wave to the drone, pull it towards you, or push it back, and the drone will go back in distance so it can capture your selfie.

The specifications are nowhere those on Mavic. However, they are still respectable. Specifications-wise, you’re looking at about 15 minutes of flight time, 2 kilometers of range, and the FHD camera. These features make up for an amazing package. The main camera is 12MP and captures Full HD 1080P 30 FPS (no 4K unfortunately). However, the camera quality is surprisingly good, and in many occasions you won’t feel the need to use a 4k shooter.

With a very aggressive price tag and excellent specifications, the Spark could be set for this summer’s selfie season.

DJI Spark Specs

  • Weight: 300 grams (0.66 pounds)
  • Size: 142 x 142 x 56 mm (5.6 x 5.6 x 2.2 inches)
  • Flight Battery: 1480 mAh 11.4 V Li-Po 3S
  • Flight Time: 15 minutes
  • Charging Time: 52 minutes
  • Operating Range: 2000 meters (6562 feet)
  • Top Speed: 50km/h (31 mph)
  • Video Resolution: 1080p
  • Megapixels: 12 MP

DJI Spark Selfie Features

  • Gesture
  • TapFly
  • ActiveTrack
  • QuickShot
  • HD Wi-Fi Video Transmission
  • Return to Home
  • FlightAutonomy

DJI Spark Pros

  • Simple Control
  • Quick Launch
  • You can create cinematic aerial videos with just a few taps
  • High-performance camera
  • Mechanical gimbal stabilization
  • Multiple shooting modes – Pano and ShallowFocus
  • Safety features
  • Small
  • GPS stabilization

DJI Spark Cons

  • No support for 24fps or high frame rate capture
  • Dedicated remote control is a pricey add-on

The Bottom Line

The DJI Spark is an impossibly small package, but it delivers all of the camera drone features most people will ever need. The DJI Spark is incredibly good fun to fly, and it features some seriously clever modes for dramatic footage.
