The areas and industries where drones can be used are emerging and increasing almost constantly. Just a few years ago, drones were used mainly in military operations, but nowadays they have definitely found a way to be useful in the civil world as well.

One of the areas where drones are heavily used these days is traveling. You must have had at least some exciting trips in your life where you wished to take some images and record beautiful videos of the nice buildings, architecture, or anything else that you liked. This is why it’s nothing strange that a lot of travelers add drones to their packing list when they plan to go on their next adventure.

Whether you like drones or not, you have to admit they are here to stay. Therefore, I did a thorough investigation on the best drones for travel, and 7 drones stood out from the others – DJI Mini 2, DJI Mavic 3, DJI Mavic 2 Pro, Parrot ANAFI, SkyDio 2, Autel Evo 2, and PowerEgg X Explorer.

Note: Keep in mind that these are only our opinions based on my thorough investigation of the best drone traveling and adventures. In any case, please do your own research before deciding which ones are the most suitable ones for your goals and needs.

At this point, it is good to note that all opinions and suggestions written in this article are not considered financial advice.

DJI Mavic Mini 2

The first drone on our list of the best drones for travel that I will show you in this article is DJI Mavic Mini 2. To be honest, this drone is probably my favorite when it comes to traveling. Mini 2 was released in November of 2020, but very quickly became a very popular drone among travelers. The first thing you will notice about Mini 2 is that it has a very compact setup and it’s even smaller than iPhone Pro Max when folded. It weighs in at only 249 grams which makes it almost effortless to carry around. Due to its weight, you do not have to register with the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) in order to use the drone.

What you want from your traveling drone is to take high-level images and record quality videos and Mini 2 definitely provides that. It features a 12 MP camera sensor, capable of shooting 4K videos at 100 Mbps. Moreover, Mini 2 features a 10 km transmission range which means Mini 2 provides all the features you need when you go traveling.

DJI Mavic 3

DJI Mavic 3 is one of the most popular drones in the industry today. The main reason why Mavic 3 became well-known so quickly (the drone was launched in November of 2021), is the fact that its equipment is on an extremely high level. This drone features a 4/3 CMOS Hasselblad camera

Moreover, Mavic 3 can fly for ~46 minutes at a distance of nearly 30 kilometers. The capacity of the battery is also good – 5000 mAh. Keep in mind though that you will need to register with the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) in order to use this drone since the rule is all drones above 249 grams need to register, and Mavic 3 weighs in at 895 grams.

Besides producing high-quality images, an important feature of DJI Mavic 3 is that it can fly under cold weather conditions, or in other words, this is a “wintertime drone”. This makes Mavic 3 suitable for wintertime traveling. If you are looking to take high-quality images and record excellent videos during your winter vacation, Mavic 3 is the drone you should definitely consider purchasing.

DJI Mavic 2 Pro

Another drone that is mainly used for traveling and backpacking is DJI Mavic 2 Pro. In fact, in the drone industry, this drone is widely considered one of the best drones for traveling purposes. The main reason why Mavic 2 Pro is suitable for traveling is that it has a design layout that makes the drones almost effortless to carry and transport.

Moreover, DJI Mavic 2 Pro is beginner-friendly and easy to use. It has GPS built-in which keeps the drone from being blown by the heavy winds which mean Mavic 2 Pro can be used under bad weather conditions. The Omnidirectional Obstacle Sensing and collision avoidance help this drone avoid crashing and obstacles. However, please do keep in mind that this drone may still crash, so make sure to still be very careful and prevent situations that might be costly for you. Images and videos Mavic 2 Pro produces are high-quality. The drone can fly for about ~30 minutes.

Parrot ANAFI

Parrot is one of the companies that decided to challenge DJI and follow its footsteps in producing high-quality compact drones. Parrot ANAFI is one of the most recent drones the company built that can offer pretty exciting features for traveling.

One of those features is the Sony CMOS sensor that allows the drone to capture images of up to 21 MP. Moreover, this drone can produce 4K footage with 4096 x 2160 resolution, 100 Mbps, a vertical 180°, and this kind of image specifics you can see very rarely in the drone industry. ANAFI is beginner-friendly and has one of the easiest-to-use navigation apps.

The transmission range is 4 km while flight time is ~25 minutes. Another thing worth noting about ANAFI is that it falls into the category of small drones so you can easily put it in your backpack and carry it around almost effortlessly while you travel.

Autel Evo 2

Autel Evo 2 is the next go-in about our list of the very best drones for traveling. When speaking about Autel Evo 2, the 1st point that we should mention the fact comes from the fact that it is feasible to utilize without an additional device. Keep in intellect that the big part of today’s drones have to associate with a smartphone app if you would like to see through the drone’s camera and snap images. Autel Evo 2 offers colors shown into the drone’s controller itself so you can fly, anecdote videos, frame images without even associating the drone to any outside device.

The drone is constructed to fly in grievous weather conditions. there exist multiple testing done with the drone and users were proficient to fly it to the degree at -11°C without literally any matter which is a thing you wish to see when deciding which drone to be selected for low-temperature conditions. Moreover, users were over glad about the battery life which was not being impacted by the weather, so it’s ~ 40 minutes. However, keep in intellect that there was lookalike testing done at lofty temperatures, more than 35°C, and the battery did not endure as long, so Autel Evo 2, I have to say, does not compose well at tall temperatures.

With that being said, Autel Evo 2 is suitable for winter traveling – when you go skiing, hiking, camping in the mountains, and backpacking.

PowerEgg X Explorer

PowerEgg X Explorer is probably a drone that is the least-known on this list. This is actually a multi-purpose camera that can be transformed into a drone as well as a “regular” camera that can be used in one hand which makes this drone very practical for traveling.

The quality of the images and videos PowerEgg X Explorer produces is on a high level since it offers a 4K/60 FPS video capability. The flight time is ~30 minutes which is decent. Moreover, it features a smart AI faces recognition tool that allows you to follow faces and automatically focus on them while you shoot.

The “Egg” in the drone’s name comes from the fact that the drone can be used as a single-handedly used camera in the form of an egg as well as a drone. You can use it as a camera on a tripod to keep track of you as you move around the environment. Another thing about PowerEgg X Explorer that most travelers will like is the fact that it’s almost effortless to carry around – it will easily be a part of your backpack without taking up a lot of space when it’s transformed into a camera.

SkyDio 2

The next drone on our list of the best drones for traveling is SkyDio 2. This drone is mostly known for its AI-powered autonomous tracking system that allows the drone to follow you anywhere you go. This kind of system can be particularly useful when you go dangerous traveling, like high mountains, caves, biking, skiing, and hiking. SkyDio 2 will record amazing videos when you are doing some extreme traveling.

Furthermore, SkyDio 2 features a 12 MP camera sensor with 4K 60 FPS shooting capabilities. The maximum transmission is 3.5 km and this drone can fly for ~23 minutes which is not great, but keep in mind that this drone has a very unique tracking system that separates it from other drones.

If you are looking for a drone that will record videos of yourself while you do some exciting stuff in the mountains for instance that you have never done before, then SkyDio 2 is the drone you should definitely consider.

Drone Accessories to buy for traveling

You were probably wondering at least once – ok, I will carry a drone when I go traveling, but what are the accessories I have to bring with me? We made a list that includes a drone bag for travel, polarizing filters, ND filters, SD Cards, extra batteries, and a gimbal cover and clamp. So, without further ado, let me describe why each of these is needed when you carry a drone with you on your trip.

Drone bag for travel

A drone bag for travel is essential and is number one on our list of must-have drone travel accessories. Travel entails bags being thrown around, at times having things set on top of them and frequently entails cramming ever more into your already carrying bags as your travel progresses and your shopping does too. A drone travel bag will guarantee that your drone is saved at all times, and will not suffer smashed arms, smashed propellers, or a damaged camera from bad handling. “Soft bags” and “hard shell bags” are the two types of drones bags.

Polarizing filters

The next accessories that are needed for drone-type of traveling are polarizing lens filters. These filters improve contrast and color saturation in your image since they can reduce reflections from water, glass, and leaves.

When you are taking an image that involves water or the glare of the sun, it can be distracting for your camera. This is why you want polarizing filters, they will minimize the glare and make your image clearer and better. There are various drones with polarizing filters on the market nowadays such as DJI Mavic 2 Zoom Filters.

ND filters

Neutral-density filters or ND filters are the next accessories I think might be suitable when you go traveling with a drone. If you want to have more flexibility with your drone camera settings then you probably need an ND filters kit with you when you go traveling.

Under keen sunlight, an ND filter allowed photographers more leeway in the selection of an aperture and shutter sprint by preventing overexposure. Furthermore, ND filters can be used to take better urban landscape shots.

SD cards (4K quality)

Recording in 2K or 4K will eat into your storage space, so it’s all well and good investing in a high-quality SD card with big storage capabilities and the capacity to address 4K footage.

Be careful here since If you buy competitive SD cards that are not consistent with 4k footage, then over there won’t be any space to store your 4K footage. It would be an indignity to leave out good scenes only because of this!

We recommend utilizing either Samsung Evo or SanDisk Grievous Pro for being utilized in your drone. We have a 128GB version of either of these in our drone at all times. The worst thing you desire is to have the total screen lined up, with your drone a mile away, and then to search you have no space left to record!

Extra batteries

Whenever you are traveling with a drone, it would be preferable to take an extra pack of batteries with you. Even though you will probably purchase a drone with decent flight time (let’s say around at least 25 minutes), you do not want the batteries to run out so you need to charge them all the time. Just imagine that you are in a beautiful place where you want to take some shots and the battery of your drone is dead. Something you want to avoid, don’t you?

Gimbal cover and clamp

The gimbal is one of the key components of a drone, as it guarantees you can have steady and gorgeous scenes at any time.

Having a gimbal mask and clamp can save this mechanism from dust, water, or bumps as you travel. Make certain you get the very best one that can be commonly removed and put on.

What to consider when buying a travel drone?

We also made a list of things you should consider when deciding which drone to purchase for travel. Our list includes weight, size and shape, your experience level, battery life, and last but definitely not least, video and picture quality. Let me describe why each of these is of the most importance.

Weight

The first thing you should definitely consider is weight. The reason is simple – you just do not want to carry a big drone with you when you traveling. Enjoyment is always the first goal when you travel and carrying a big drone with you can spoil that. Moreover, keep in mind that the bigger your drone is, you will have less space in your backpack to carry other important things such as food and drinks for example.

When it comes to exact numbers, I would strongly suggest drones that are lighter than 1000 grams when you go traveling.

Size and shape

Similar to weight, pay special attention to size and shape since this determines how much space will the drone take from your backpack or luggage. Of course, it is completely fine to take a bigger drone with you, but only if you have enough space in your luggage, car, or whatever vehicle you travel with.

Your experience level

Previous experience you had with using drones will always be a plus. You should always put a decent time and effort into practicing with your drone before you actually go traveling. If you are a complete beginner in the drone industry, I would strongly suggest some beginner-friendly drones such as DJI Mavic 2 Pro.

Battery life

Battery life is yet another thing to consider for traveling drones. You want a drone that can fly for at least ~25 minutes (preferably more) since you don’t want to find yourself in a position to charge your drone all the time since this can affect your traveling experience. Pay attention to the flight time since some drones can fly only 5-10 minutes and this is something you want to avoid when you travel.

Video and picture quality

You can argue this is the most important feature all drones that are used for traveling need to offer – high-quality photos and videos. 4K Cameras are the ones most travelers like to have.

In the drone industry, it is typical that smaller drones do not have the best possible cameras, but they are suitable to carry around in your backpack or luggage.
