Your thoughts probably go to a spooky hairy spider on hearing the word “Tarantula” and the manufacturer tried to imitate the face of a spider in the design of the body.

The Tarantula X6 (officially known as JJRC H16) stands the test of time as one of the most affordable and awesome drones in the consumer market and it is definitely one of the most popular drones currently available on the market.

The YiZhan  Tarantula X6 is probably the only drone that can carry Mobius or GoPro alike action cameras with the price under $60. You can also buy this drone together with the 5MP camera if for you it’s enough to get a decent video quality.

The YiZhan X6 drone is known for its size as well as the speed and power it presents and it is equipped with many amazing futures that help beginner pilots on their first flights.

Tarantula X6 Design

The design of the Tarantula X6 tries to copy a spider and as far as color goes, the drone is available in blue and black. The drone weighs in at 1282 grams and it is one of the heavier drones on the market.

The Tarantula X6 is equipped with 7 LED lights for better orientation, especially during night flights. Two LED lights are on front of the cockpit to consolidate the spider look, one on the top of the drone and one under each arm.

Due to the advanced design The Tarantula X6 is very durable and the drone also has the ability to provide a very stable flying experience. The drone is large enough and strong enough that it can fly in even a brisk breeze.

The drone is also extremely tough and easily fixable. The drone is equipped with top class professional propellers/blades. There are also EVA shock mounts that offer better protection from damage. Another great thing is that The Tarantula X6’s motors are equipped with a tiny connector.

This is a very useful feature when you have to replace the motors because you don’t have to disassembly the entire drone just to replace a dead motor.

The only problem is the battery door because it has a screw that you would need to screw in if you want to close it.

Tarantula X6 Drone Test Flight

The $55 YiZhan Tarantula X6 quadcopter, 300 meter range, no kidding! This is the first quadcopter that I've seen under $100 with such long range, unmodified, ...

Tarantula X6 Battery

The Tarantula X6 is powered by a nice 7.4V 1200MAH Li-Po battery and has a flight time of about 8 minutes. This drone is equipped with an above-average sized battery to power its flight, compared to the average of 650 mAh. The battery takes about 90 minutes to completely charge.  With this battery, the Tarantula X6 will have enough power for stable flights even in windy days.

It is important to note that some users have installed a higher capacity 2200mAh LI-PO battery and got about 15 minutes of continuous flight. This is great for such an inexpensive drone. However, the flight time will decrease if you add additional weight.

The only problem is that you have to actually remove the battery after every flight because there is no on and off button. This means that the lights will continue to flicker if you keep the battery on.

Tarantula X6 Camera

The Tarantula X6 does not come with a built-in camera. However, the drone is compatible with external cameras that can easily attach to the drone. The drone can be equipped with the 60 fps 720p HD camera or the wide-angle 30 fps 1080p Full HD camera. You can also use a higher quality camera like a GoPro, Mobius or a Xiaomi yi camera. These cameras are installed on a special camera mount with vibration reduction system to stabilize the video even more and allow for jello free aerials.

In terms of video quality, it is very important that you equip your drone with a high quality camera because placing a low quality camera on an instable drone is not such a good idea.

Tarantula X6 Controller

The transmitter is made from some cheap looking but surprisingly durable plastic. The transmitter looks cheap and very small compared to the drone’s size. The 2.4GHz technology is adopted for anti-interference. This means that many drones can fly at the same time and do not interfere with each other.

The sticks have a nice grip overall and the controls feel pretty good. However, some users have reported that the top buttons are a little harder to use when flying. These buttons are responsible for changing the flight mode (left) and performing flips (right).

The transmitter also has a very helpful LCD screen that shows important information. You can check on the battery life of the controller, the trimming axys and signal strength there. There are also two buttons in the right of the LCD screen, one to record videos and one to capture images. However, they will work only with the stock camera.

You can also set the flight speed between 3 values: 40%, 60% and 100% with the top left button of the remote controller. Another great thing is that the antenna can be used at an angle for better signal reach.

The Tarantula X6 can be flown up to 300 meters away from you using solely a remote control for operation.  The controller requires 6 AA batteries to function. However, they are not included in the package so you need to provide them by yourself.
