Ok, if you have at least a tiny bit of interest in the drone industry, you must have heard that the absolute industry leader DJI launched their new mini drone and dubbed it as Mini 2. Notice that they dropped the Mavic in the name of the drone – it is just DJI Mini 2. And this is an article about how it fares against its predecessor – Mavic Mini.

So, let’s jump into the nitty gritty of the duel between DJI Mavic Mini vs Mini 2.

Mini vs Mini 2: Weight

The weight has remained the same. Mini was revolitionary drone when it comes to its size and weight as it was below the mandatory registration threshhold in USA. The new Mini 2 has stayed below the same line as well, weighing the same 249 or 0.55 pounds.

Mini vs Mini 2: Camera

This is the biggest difference that surely made a lot of DJI fans happy. New Mini 2 can shoot 4k videos at 30fps. If you want to go higher, than the quality will drop to 1920p at 60 fps. Nevertheless, this is the most sought after upgrade and DJI delivered on it big time.

The DJI Mavic Mini comes with a 3-axis gimbal and a 12-megapixel photo resolution. The maximum video resolution is 2.7k at 30 fps or 1080p (FullHD) at a maximum of 60 frames per second.

Mini vs Mini 2: Range

Thanks to the powerful proprietary system from DJI called Ocusync 2.0, new Mini 2 can fly much further (in theory, legally you are not allowed to fly out of the zone of your eyesight). Mini 2 can do a 10km video transmission thanks to the ability of Ocusync to switch automatically between two transmission ranges: 2.4GHz and 5.8Ghz frequency bands, depending on the signal strength.

DJI Mini vs Mini 2: Obstacle avoidance

Unfortunately, none of the models has any obstacle avoidance sensors and flying them will keep you on your toes as you will need to be careful of not hitting trees or walls while flying your drone pet.

DJI Mini vs Mini 2: Photo and video formats

Another huge difference, especially for those pilots who put more emphasis on photo and video quality and post-production editing is the RAW format that Mini 2 supports for images. Mavic Mini is JPEG-only drone.

However, Mini 2 only has photo RAW format as they failed to add these advanced formats for videos. New Mini 2 does not have D-log or D-Cinelike or any other picture profiles.

DJI Mini vs Mini 2: Battery and flight time

The Mavic Mini remote controller has a battery capacity of 2600 mAh. It takes about 120 minutes to fully charge with the DJI 18W USB charger and you can fly around 30 minutes with it.

Mini 2 has a slightly improved flying time as it can do 31 minutes with one battery and it ekes out a victory in this segment.

Dji Mavic Mini vs Mini 2: Motors and wind stability

DJI claims they have upgraded the motors on Mini 2 but it is not a too significant upgrade. The new drone will be slightly faster, 16m/s in comparison to Mini’s 13m/s top speed. It also has a bit faster ascending speed than Mavic Mini. However, one big advantage of the more powerful motors is a better stability in wind gusts for the new Mini 2. It will be able to withstand 24mps winds without becoming a leaf in the wind. This still doesn’t make new Mini 2 a good drone for windy conditions so better avoid flying on such days.

Mini 2 vs DJI Mavic Mini: Price

And of course, final difference is the price point. Mavic Mini is known for its affordability and Mini 2 aims to claim the same reputation. The basic model will cost only $50 more than Mavic Mini but a fully combo that sports a 3 batteries-set, charger set and spare propellers is around $600. So, there is a price difference that is pretty significant and not justifiable for everyone.
